New IRS Mileage Rate

Effective July 1, 2008, the IRS has increased the standard mileage rate from 50.5 cents/mile to 58.5 cents/mile. If a church finds this increase to be an undue burden then the January 1 rate of 50.5 cents can be used for the balance of 2008. The conference will hold at the January 1 rate for its respective employees. If a church opts to hold at the lower rate then an employee can claim any difference between the IRS rate and rate received on their tax return as an unreimbursed business expense. If you have any questions, please call Jessica at (800) 831-3972, ext. 123

Help needed for Hurricane Relief

Dear Friends,
Donations for hurricane relief along the Gulf Coast this year are falling far behind the level of need and the usual levels of giving. This is true for the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) as well as for other well-known relief organizations, including the Red Cross.

Lack of donations are especially short in response to Hurricane Ike, which struck east Texas, including the Houston and Galveston areas, on September 13, creating the worst disaster on record for the congregations and institutions of the Texas Conference of The United Methodist Church.

The impact of the low level of donations is graphically described by Reporter Kathy Gilbert of United Methodist News Service in an October 3 story that can be read on umc.org at http://www.umc.org/site/apps/nlnet/content3.aspx?c=lwL4KnN1LtH&b=1723955&ct= 6055941.

The item can also be found on the internet homepages of Global Ministries and of UMCOR at http://gbgm-umc.org/global_news/full_article.cfm?articleid=5163 and http://new.gbgm-umc.org/umcor/newsroom/releases/archives08/lackofdonations respectively.

Gifts may be made through the several regular channels for donations to the Advance. The specific account is UMCOR Advance #3019695, Hurricanes 2008, Hurricane Ike.

Up to 10 percent of gifts may be used to support church reconstruction.
Thank you!
